Another Giant Step on the Way to Become an Energy Hub

 

While security of energy supply has been gaining critical importance in the world, particularly in Europe, BOTAŞ has added a new one to its energy breakthroughs. Our country's energy, BOTAŞ, has completed the capacity expansion works of Silivri Natural Gas Storage Facility, Türkiye’s first natural gas storage facility, and brought this critical and world scale investment in supply security to our country.

Another Successful Step to Become an Energy Hub

Silivri Natural Gas Storage Facility Capacity Expansion Project, Türkiye's first and Europe's largest offshore natural gas storage facility, was commissioned with a ceremony with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Ceremony held on December 16, 2022 at Silivri Natural Gas Storage Facility, located in Silivri district of İstanbul, was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, BOTAŞ General Manager Burhan Özcan, members of parliament, foreign mission chiefs, representatives of public institutions and organizations, representatives of the business world and NGOs, citizens and several members of the press.

The Largest Facility of Its Kind in Europe

In his opening speech, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez stated that Türkiye's first and largest natural gas storage facility has been commissioned at full capacity, and that it is the largest in Europe among the likes of it. The Minister noted that now that the capacity expansion works are completed, the facility has reached 4.6 billion cubic meters.

The program continued with the speech of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The President stated that the initial phase of the storage project was commissioned in 2007; the latest expansion works were carried out by undertaking 31,000-meter marine drilling in 18 wells with platforms 3 kilometers offshore. Emphasizing that the importance of 4.6 billion cubic meters of capacity reached in Silivri and 5.4 billion cubic meters of capacity targeted in Tuz Gölü, President Erdoğan noted that investments will continue until Türkiye reaches the most secure level in the exploration and operation as well as storage of natural gas.

After the ceremony, BOTAŞ General Manager Burhan Özcan made a presentation to President Erdoğan about the facility and BOTAŞ activities in general.
